Cynthia Ellen Nixon was born April 9, 1966 to Anne Knoll (actress) and Walter Nixon (radio journalist). She was born in New York City, NY and began acting at age 12. Her first role was in the 1979 ABC Afterschool Special, "The Seven Wishes of a Rich Kid." She made her feature film debut in 1980's "Little Darlings" and her Broadway debut that same year. She continued her theater work through high school and college, and in 1986 earned her first major supporting role in "The Manhattan Project."

Nixon reached star status when she joined the cast of HBO's hit "Sex and the City"in 1998. Nixon played one of leader Carrie's (Sarah Jessica Parker) three best friends, lawyer Miranda Hobbes. The series ran for six seasons, and Nixon took home an Emmy for her role when the show ended in 2004. Her success as Miranda lead her to roles in 2000's "Advice From a Caterpillar," 2002's "Igby Goes Down" and HBO's "Warm Springs," which earned her another Emmy. In 2008, she returned to her role as Miranda for the wildly popular "Sex and the City: The Movie."

The actress had two children with Danny Mozes, who she was involved with from 1988 to 2003. In 2004, she began dating a woman, Christine Marinoni, saying that she never felt a big change in her sexuality and she just fell in love with Marinoni. In April 2008, Nixon announced that she had battled breast cancer.
