Elijah Jordan Wood is the second of three children of Debra and Warren Wood. He had been active in school stage plays as a child. He also did modeling and local commercials before his family moved to Los Angeles in 1988.

Wood got his first break in the city when he landed a small role in Paula Abdul's music video "Forever Your Girl" in 1989. After which, he got a part in "Back to the Future Part II." Then he was cast in the 1990 film "Avalon," which gave him attention after the film received critical acclaim and four Academy Awards nominations.

He received rave reviews for his performance in the 1991 film "Paradise." He starred in other notable films including "Forever Young" with Mel Gibson, "The Good Son," and "The Adventures of Huck Finn" among others. However, it was his performance in the 1994 film "The War" that gave him a nomination for a "Young Star Award."

After appearing in numerous films, Wood emerged from being a child and teen star to a young actor when he landed one of the lead roles in the 1991 film "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" alongside big names such as Sir Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, and Christopher Lee among others. He reprised his role as Frodo in the two sequels of the film.

To resist typecasting, he accepted various roles after the fantasy trilogy. He appeared as an ethically challenged lab technician in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" in 2004 and as a cannibal in "Sin City" in 2005. He also provided the voice of a penguin in the animated film "Happy Feet" in 2006.

In 2005, he started his own record label called Simian Records.

Wood, who had been nominated numerous times and won countless acting awards, has always been private about his personal life. He is said to be currently dating backup dancer Pamela Racine.
