Shawn Carter, better known to his fans as Jay Z, is a rapper, record producer, and entrepreneur. He is currently one of the most successful hip-hop artists and entrepreneurs in the world. Not only is he one of the world’s best-selling artists, every album he’s ever released has gone platinum, he has received countless awards, ranks consistently as one of the greatest rappers of all time, and has even created three albums, Reasonable Doubt (1996), The Blueprint (2001), and The Black Album, that are all considered landmarks in the hip-hop genre and all three made it on to Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. His amazing achievements, entrepreneurial endeavors, and big money investments have all added up to give Jay Z a net worth of $600 million.
In 1995, with no record deal, Jay Z sold CDs out of his car and created Roc-A-Fella Records with friends Damon Dash and Kareem Biggs. In 1996 he released his debut album Reasonable Doubt. It made it to number 23 on the Billboard 200 chart and eventually made platinum status. Since 1996 Jay Z has earned $2.25 million from the sale of the album.
After signing with Def Jam Records in 1997 Jay Z released his follow-up album In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 which was produced by Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs. He later revealed that he made the album while trying to deal with the death of his close friend The Notorious B.I.G. This album earned platinum status too and Jay Z earned $2.5 million from the sales. In 1998 he released Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life. This record eventually became his most successful album commercially. It was certified five times platinum and to date has sold over 5 million copies. He earned an astounding $10.5 million from album sales.
In 1999 Jay Z released Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter which included the hit “Big Pimpin.” Proving to be another success, the album sold over 3 million copies and earned Jay Z $5 million. In 2000, what was meant to be a compilation album of Roc-A-Fella artists, became Jay Z’s new album. The Dynasty: Roc La Familia sold over 2 million copies in the U.S. alone and added $3 million to Jay Z’s bank account.
2001 brought the release of yet another standout album. The Blueprint is considered to be one of hip hop’s top albums by many in the music industry. Although it was released in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks it still managed to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 400,000 copies in its first week. Amazingly, The Blueprint was written in just two days and netted the rapper another $3.5 million.
In 2002 Jay Z released The Blueprint: The Gift & The Curse which was a double album. It too debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 3 million copies in the U.S. The album featured the song “03 Bonnie & Clyde” which featured Jay Z’s future wife Beyoncé Knowles. That same year he collaborated with R. Kelly and they released a collaborative album entitled The Best of Both Worlds. He earned $2.5 million and $1.2 million from the albums respectively.
In 2003 Jay Z opened the first 40/40 club in New York City. The chain has since expanded to Atlantic City, Las Vegas, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. At the opening of the first 40/40 club, Jay Z announced that he was working on The Black Album, his eighth studio album. It was released in 2004 and he made $4 million from sales of the record. He also released Unfinished Business that year, which was his second collaboration with R. Kelly. Earnings from that record were $750,000. In late 2004 Jay Z was named president of Def Jam Records.
He returned in 2006 with his comeback album Kingdom Come. It sold 680,000 copies in the first week which, according to Entertainment Weekly, was “the highest single-week total in Jay’s decade long career.” The album went on to sell 2 million copies and added $3 million to Jay Z’s bank account. He released his tenth studio album the following year. American Gangster sold over 1 million copies and earned Jay Z $1.6 million.
Also in 2007, Jay Z sold his clothing label Rocawear for $204 million. In December of that year he resigned his position as president of Def Jam Records. He earned $5 million in royalties from Rocawear in 2008, even though he sold it the year before. He also signed a 10-year $150 million deal with Live Nation in 2008 after he parted ways with Def Jam. He announced that he would start his Roc Nation imprint which would serve as a talent/management agency, record label, and music publishing company.
His next studio album, The Blueprint 3, was released in September of 2009. When it hit number 1 on the Billboard 22 chart it surpassed Elvis’s previous record making him the current solo artist record holder. In August of 2010 he revealed that he would be collaborating with Kanye West on the five-track EP Watch the Throne. The project ended up turning into a full length LP and was released in 2011, earning Jay $2 million.
Although he didn’t put out any new records in 2012 he raked in a whopping $42 million from appearances, club royalties, endorsement deals, and other residual income. In 2013 he released Magna Carta Holy Grail and also paired with Samsung to give Galaxy users exclusivity to the first 1 million downloads of the album. He brought in $1.5 million from album sales and $5 from his deal with Samsung. In September of that year he sold shares that he owned of the Barclays Center for $1.5 million. Forbes magazine has reported that Jay has earned $60 million in 2014. They credit this to his 68 concerts, Roc Nation empire, revenues from his 40/40 clubs, and residual earnings from his records.
Jay Z’s assets are worth millions on their own. From house, to cars, to a private jet this mogul has everything and then some. Jay pays $65,000 a month to rent his apartment in the Trump World Tower in New York, but that is just the tip of the real estate iceberg. Jay Z also owns a $9.3 million mansion in Indian Creek Village, Florida as well as a $10 million in Scarsdale, New York. He owns both properties with his wife.
His other assets include his many modes of transportation. The most lavish is his $40 million Bombardier Challenger 850 personal jet. He also drives an $8 million Maybach Exelero, a $3 million Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, a $1.5 million Pagani Zonda, a $500,000 Rolls Royce Phantom, a $500,000 Ferrari F430 Spider, and a $120,000 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet.
Jay Z serves as a co-brand director for Budweiser Select, is part owner of the Brooklyn Nets NBA team, and invests in everything from real estate to skin care products. With talk of everything from building hotels to starting a sports management company, it is easy to see how Jay Z’s business savvy has earned him so much cash. Marrying Beyoncé Knowles in 2008 and having daughter Blue Ivy in 2012 doesn’t seem to be slowing Jay down a bit. His net worth is sure to continue to climb in the future.
