Jennifer Love Hewitt was born to speech-language pathologist Patricia Mae Shipp and medical technician Herbert Daniel Hewitt. After her parents' divorce, she and brother Todd were brought up by their mother in Nolanville, Texas.

Even at an early age, she had been an active entertainer, singing at a livestock show and at a restaurant-dance hall. After winning the title of Texas Our Little Miss Talent, she moved to Los Angeles at the age of 10 with her mom to pursue a singing and acting career.

Hewitt then appeared in more than twenty TV commercials after moving to L.A. She became a regular on the Disney variety show "Kids Incorporated" from 1989 to 1991. After appearing in several short-lived television series, she finally garnered modest fame when she landed the role of Sarah Reeves on the hit Fox series "Party of Five" from 1995 to 1999.

She made her film debut in the independent film "Munchie" in 1992. But it was in 1997 that she became a film star after a lead role in the cult horror flick "I Know What You Did Last Summer." She also appeared in its sequel, "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" in 1998.

Her other notable films are "Can't Hardly Wait" in 1998 and "Heartbreakers" in 2001.

She currently stars in the TV series "Ghost Whisperer."

Hewitt also enjoyed average success in the music industry. She recorded tracks and four albums since her start in the industry.

She had been known to date several showbiz personalities namely John Mayer, Carson Daly, Kip Pardue, Rich Cronin, Joey Lawrence, and Will Friedle. But in 2006, she began dating Scottish actor Ross McCall. They became engaged in November 2007.
