Whoopi Goldberg Thanked Patrick Swayze For Role In "Ghost"

Whoopi Goldberg won an Oscar for her role in the movie "Ghost" and she says she owes it all to actor Patrick Swayze. Goldberg, who is one of the hosts of "The View" said Thursday that when she won her Academy Award Swayze was one of the only people she really thanked.

Swayze, 55, was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is undergoing treatment.

In a statement released by his representative Annett Wolf, Swayze's physician Dr. George Fisher said he was "optimistic" about the "Dirty Dancing" actor's prognosis for battling the disease.

"Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far.

On her show "The View," Goldberg reminisced about Swayze and said that the actor persuaded "Ghost" director Jerry Zucker to cast her in the film.

Goldberg, 52, starred alongside Swayze and Demi Moore in the 1990 film. Goldberg earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of psychic Oda Mae Brown, who helped the slain businessman Sam Wheat, played by Swayze, communicate with his grieving fiance.
