David Beckham to launch own brand of men's underwear

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN Entertainment) - David Beckham is planning to launch a underwear line and another fragrance this year. The 36-year-old soccer star, who has been the face of Emporio Armani underwear together with wife Victoria for the past seasons, has decided to enter the industry after learning of how big the market for bodywear is.

David confirmed to WWD that he has been busy working with a design team for the clothing line. He will also release his newest scent, Homme by David Beckham, this September. He is partnering with Simon Fuller, the creator of "American Idol," for his new ventures.

After becoming the face and body of Armani underwear for four seasons, David realized that there is a great demand for well-made men's bodywear, and that he can enter into the business himself.

He told WWD, "I have had the idea of doing a bodywear collection for some time now. The push to do something of my own really came as a result of my collaboration with Armani. They told me that their gross turnover in 2007 was 16 million euros [$22.7 million at current exchange] and after the campaign in 2008 it went up to 31 million euros [$43.9 million] in 2008."

"It proved to me that there is a real market for good-looking, well-made men's bodywear."

And while creating a fashion brand is more of Victoria's field, David said he is thinking of new business ventures to support them even after his soccer days are gone.

He told the website, "It's not my natural inclination to see myself as a brand, I'm just a person who has been fortunate to explore other interests and passions outside of the game I love. I will always be associated with my sport but I am now working across other areas that will continue long after my career has finished."
