Joanna Lumley's Campaign Gets Support From A Senior Member Of The Royal Family

May 6, 2009

A senior member of Britain's royal family has backed Joanna Lumley's campaign to allow Gurkhas to settle in the U.K. The "Absolutely Fabulous" actress told U.K. MPs she had received the letter of support, but refused to reveal who had written it.

Speaking to members of the Home Affairs Select Committee, Joanna said: "I do not know what we have to do. I don't know where else we have to go."

"We have gone to the High Court, we have gone to the press, we have gone to the people and to Parliament. Where do we go to?"

"The royal family are not allowed to get involved, although personally I have had a letter of support."

Joanna later claimed it was not from either Prince Charles or the Duke of Edinburgh. It has been suggested the author could be Charles' wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and that she wrote to the actress last year.

A source told Britain's The Daily Mail newspaper: "They are good friends. It would make sense."

Joanna is known to be close to the royal couple, and even attended their 2005 wedding.

The actress was speaking to MPs as part of her ongoing campaign for Gurkhas human rights.

Gurkhas are soldiers from Nepal and parts of India who fought in the British Army's Brigade of Gurkhas during the world wars. They are fighting for the right to settle, with their families, in Britain.
