Antonio Banderas was "afraid" of dating Madonna

New York City, NY, United States (Celebrity News Service) - Antonio Banderas says he was "afraid" of dating Madonna because she was too "powerful."

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar magazine, the 50-year-old Spanish actor, who costarred with the pop superstar in the 1996 film adaptation "Evita," said he was flattered when he heard that Madonna was romantically interested in him early in his career.

But the actor, who was married at the time with his first wife, Ana Leza, insisted that nothing would ever have happened between them.

"It was kind of flattering when somebody said, 'She likes you, a lot.' I said, 'Oh, really? I've no idea what I should do about this, I mean, I'm married.' So, nothing happened.

"I was afraid of it at the time, because she was a very powerful woman. I didn't want to be Madonna's boy. For good or for bad, I just wanted to have my own career."

When Banderas was introduced to Madonna by a friend, which was captured in the singer's 1991 documentary film, "Madonna: Truth or Dare," he said he "flipped out" when they first met because he was so overwhelmed by her fame.

"She said a lot of things at the table when we were having dinner, I couldn't understand (expletive). I was just flipping out that I was sitting down close to Madonna. She was very famous already, and we were just local people."

Since his encounter with Madonna, Banderas divorced his first wife and married actress Melanie Griffith in 2006. They have a daughter, 15-year-old Stella del Carmen.

Banderas will star in the adventure film "Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World," which will be released on Aug. 19, and in the spinoff prequel to the "Shrek" series, "Puss in Boots," which premieres on Nov. 4.
