Paris Hilton and Benji Madden split because Benji was jealous of her relationship with Britain's Prince William, it has been claimed.

The Good Charlotte rocker was said to be furious when William, who is second in line to the throne, told Paris he would be attending the New Year's Eve party she and Benji were scheduled to host in Sydney, Australia.

A source told Fox News: "William spent a fair bit of time with Paris when she was in London filming her new TV show. For security reasons, he won't confirm his attendance until just before, but we're told he is pretty keen to meet up with Paris."

Benji's jealousy is said to have become too much for Paris, resulting in the couple mutually agreeing to end their romance.

Paris - who met William while in London filming her new TV show - has previously revealed she is keen to date William, but only when he gets rid of his "mousy" girlfriend Kate Middleton, who he has been dating for around five years.

Paris said: "I'd be more than happy to date William - so long as he ditches the mousy girlfriend. I couldn't believe it when I met him. He was awesome and really hot."

"He knew about my show and why I was in London so we talked about that for a while. He's just a really sweet down-to-earth guy. So is Harry."
