September 22, 2009

Britain's Prince William attended the memorial of soccer legend Sir Bobby Robson Monday. The future king - who is the president of the English Football Association (FA) - paid his respects to the former England manager, who died in July.

The service was held at Durham Cathedral, North East England, and was attended by over 1,000 guests.

Speaking at the time of Bobby's death, William issued the following statement: "I am deeply saddened to hear about Sir Bobby Robson's death. His contribution to English football as a player, manager and superb ambassador for our national game has been immense. He will be sadly missed by football fans everywhere, and I am thinking about his family at this difficult time."

Former players Gary Lineker, Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer and Stuart Pearce were all in attendance as was the current England manager Fabio Capello.

Other guests included Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton as well as Bobby's widow, Elsie, and children.

Bobby passed away in July aged 76 after battling cancer five times. He helped to raise around £1.8 million for his foundation which funds research into the early detection of cancer.
