The Late Princess Diana's Private Letters To Remain Private

February 19, 2009

Britain's Princess Diana's private letters are going to be kept secret. A request to make the notes available to the public was rejected because the letters - which were sent to the British government - were deemed to be "of a personal nature" by the Information Commissioner, and unrelated to government business.

Deputy Information Commissioner Graham Smith said: "It is important to draw a clear distinction between matters of a public interest and matters about which the public may be merely curious."

Britain's royal family is usually exempt from the Freedom of Information Act, unless the information is deemed to be in the interest of the public.

The first request to read the letters from the princess - who died in 1997 after a car accident in Paris - was made in October 2006.

At the time, the letters were kept hidden by the Cabinet Office, who instead released birthday telegrams from Diana to prime ministers.

The most recent review confirmed the public interest in not releasing the letters "outweighed" any gained by making them freely available.
